We'll just call this one a happy accident I guess... This is a late '70s (maybe early '80s) Ludwig Supraphonic LM400 chrome over aluminum snare drum. This era of drums was notorious for the chrome flaking off. So, a previous owner decided to bondo, prime, and then spraypaint the drum gold... with less than optimal results. When we acquired the drum, I decided to quickly sand the finish smooth and give it a coat of "hammer-paint" to at least make the drum presentable.
But, after that initial sanding I kinda thought it looked really cool as is... like a half-done street rod. So I left it that way and gave it a coat of clear satin finish to toughen it up a bit.
The final addition was new heads and new Gibaralr 3.0mm flanged hoops to give a little more "heft" to the cross stick & rim shots. There is a little pitting & dings on the lugs, as well as some rusty screws, but it just adds to the look. The result is a great looking version of that classic Supraphonic sound!
